Question

Answer

What is Evansville SCUBA Club?

Evansville SCUBA is a place for divers of Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Illinois, and surrounding states to meet and discuss diving (and snorkeling) in our region.

We aim to be a good source for dive buddies, dive location information, and general SCUBA related information specific to our area.

You do not need to be from the area to join, however! We dive anyplace we can and our members travel to far away locations. If you want to share your knowledge or just meet some cool people, please join our community!

Who runs the site?

The original site was a Yahoo group started and maintained by Trever Simon. The site as it is now is owned by the club but ran by Jason Massey with the help of Trever and several others.

We are always looking for content, suggestions, opinions, etc. regarding the site. We'd all like to see it become a good place for information about SCUBA diving in general.

How long as the club been around?

The club was initially formed as a Yahoo group in Feb. 2006. This website was created May 2, 2006, but the official club was formed in May 2007.

Why the ads?

The site is paid for with member dues, ad revenue and donations. By having ads, we reduce the amount taken from member dues allowing more money to be used for club activities.

We are considering removing these ads for paid members.

Is there anything I can do to help with the site?

Sure! First, just participating in the forums, submitting interesting news articles, etc. helps the site. Every person who shares their experiences/opinions/suggestions help other divers in some way. The more info, the more people come and join our community.

If you are a regular web surfer who can spare some extra time, we might be interested in having you as a forum moderator. Moderators help keep the forums under control when the admins aren't online. We can't be here at all hours of the day, and like it or not, eventually someone or something gets posted that shouldn't be on the board. Moderators have the ability to close, move, or delete anything they deem inappropriate for the site. Sometimes a person even needs to be banned to keep them from continiously disturbing the boards.

If you'd like to become a moderator, please contact admin@evvscuba.com.

Do you ever have meetings?

Yes! We now have monthly Meet and Greets (MAGs). These are generally casual, fun affairs allowing everyone to put faces with names and to chit-chat about scuba diving. The meeting location varies each month to make it was fair as possible for club members. Some previous locations have been The Pub (Evansville), Roca Bar (Newburgh) or a members home.

If you would like to attend, please check our Meet And Greet forum for information regarding our next meet. Everyone is welcome!

Now that the club has become official, we also have monthly board meetings. Every club member can come to these as well, but these meetings are more formal and are used to discuss official club business. Information regarding these meetings can also be found in the forums.

Do you make any money off of the club store?

Yes. We currently make one dollar or less (depending on item price) per item.

This money is put into the club fund and is used for club activities.

What do I get for making a donation and what do you do with the money?

Our undying gratitude! ;-)

After making a donation, you get the warm and fuzzy feeling that comes with helping keep the site running. As an added bonus, anyone who donates also gets an honorary rank of "Supporter" in the forums (except for Admins and Moderators). This way everyone knows that you are a cool person who has a few extra dollars to give for a good cause. What cause would that be? Bringing local divers together for diving, of course!

Please keep in mind that donations are just that, donations. You do not have to give a dime to be a member of this site.

The money is used to help cover the expenses of the site and club. Those expenses can include gatherings, advertising, parties, or whatever else the club votes to use the money towards.

We are a not-for-profit club so no money is used to buy the board new diving gear. ;-)

Do you have to live in Illinois, Indiana, Ohio or Kentucky to join?

No. We encourage all divers to join the site.

The main reason we deal with those states is because the main purpose of this site is for divers to find dive buddies in our area. Obviously we can't meet someone in Florida for a quick weekend dive. There are a lot of other scuba sites on the Internet with member from all over the world. Those are great sources of general information, but this site will eventually be a great source for diving in our area. I guess we want this site to become specialized regarding diving in these states.

But please don't let that stop you from joining, however. While we may not be able to meet up with you every weekend to dive, we might just be able to meet up with you on our next vacation! Likewise, we can show you some cold water quarry diving if you are ever in our area!

Do I need to be an experienced diver?

Not at all. Our members skills range from just certified to very experienced tech divers. There will always be someone willing to dive with you regardless of skill or certification level.

The whole purpose for this site is for local divers to find dive buddies and to support our local dive community.

Do you dive all year?

Several members have drysuits and will dive all winter. The number of dives do increase when the weather starts getting warmer though.
