As mentioned in a past news article Evansville Scuba Club interviewed Mr. Michael Ange, Technical Editor, Scuba Diving magazine, and author of “DIVER DOWN Real-World Scuba Accidents and How To Avoid Them” published by McGraw Hill Publishing, ISBN# 0071445722. That interview has been completed.
Thanks go to Mr. Ange for his time, knowledge, and insight to our underwater passion. and to Dennis Talbott for helping with the interview.
The interview may be viewed in it’s entirety in the Club Members Only forum. Here is one of many questions:
ESC: What type of mind set should a diver have? Diving is a high risk sport and seems that already puts a diver, or a person thinking about diving as a ‘dare devil’ or thrill seeker.
M.A.: A slightly paranoid one. You don't want to be distracted to the point that diving is not enjoyable, but you should always have the realization in the back of your mind that anything can go wrong at any time, especially those things that you don't even know about. I tell my students to think in terms of Murphy's Law (anything that can go wrong, will go wrong). I take it a step further - Murphy is alive and well, lives in the unprepared diver's gear bag where he waits patiently to kill him or her.
ESC: Is there one common thing, or link, that you have seen between all of the accidents you have analyzed?
M.A.: Actually, there are two common links in almost all accidents……
If you are an Evansville Scuba Club member, please go to the Club Members Only forum for the entire interview. If you are not a member yet, what are you waiting for? This is just one example of the things we are doing as a club. Join up, have fun, maybe even learn a thing or two, and GO DIVING!!!!!
